Why Sugar Content in Kids Supplements Actually Matters (And What to Look For)

As a mom of seven, I've spent a lot of time reading supplement labels. Like, a lot. And one of the things that surprised me most when I started really digging in was how much sugar gets hidden inside kids' vitamins and greens powders.

We're talking about products marketed as healthy. For kids. And yet, when you flip the label over, some of them pack in 8, 10, even 12 grams of sugar per serving. That's more than a cookie.

So today I want to break down why sugar content in kids supplements actually matters โ€” and what you should be looking for when you're shopping.

Why "It's Just a Little Sugar" Isn't the Whole Story

I used to think the same thing. It's just one serving a day. How bad could it be? But here's what changed my thinking: most kids are already getting far more added sugar than recommended, and supplements are often one of those sneaky sources.

The American Heart Association recommends that children under 18 get no more than 25 grams of added sugar per day โ€” and for younger kids, even less. When a supplement is contributing 8โ€“10 grams of that, you've just used up nearly half their daily budget before breakfast.

And then consider that we give supplements every single day. It adds up fast.

The Real Reason Supplements Have So Much Sugar

Here's an honest truth: sugar makes things taste good. And if something tastes good, kids take it without a fight โ€” which means better reviews and repeat purchases for the company.

I get it. I'm a mom. The last thing I want is a daily battle over a supplement. But there's a difference between making something kid-friendly and loading it up with added sugar just to mask a mediocre formula.

A well-made greens powder with quality ingredients shouldn't need 10 grams of sugar to taste okay. It should taste good because the flavors are thoughtfully developed โ€” not because sugar is doing all the heavy lifting.

What 3 Grams Actually Looks Like

When we created NOT. Broccoli, we were intentional about this. Our greens powder has just 3 grams of sugar per serving. That's it.

Three grams is roughly what you'd find in half a small apple. It's sweet enough that my kids actually enjoy it, but it's not making a meaningful dent in their daily sugar allowance. We also use natural flavoring โ€” no artificial sweeteners, no high-fructose corn syrup, nothing synthetic.

For reference: 3 grams of sugar across all 30 servings in a jar means you're adding less than 100 total grams of added sugar to your child's diet from this one product over an entire month. That feels completely manageable.

How to Read a Supplement Label for Sugar

When you're evaluating any kids supplement, here's what I look at:

1. Total sugars vs. added sugars. Some sugar in whole food ingredients is naturally occurring (like from fruit). Added sugars are the ones to watch. Look for the "Added Sugars" line on the nutrition label.

2. Where does sugar appear in the ingredient list? Ingredients are listed in order of quantity. If "sugar" is in the first three ingredients, that's a red flag.

3. Watch for sugar aliases. Maltodextrin, dextrose, corn syrup solids, cane juice โ€” these are all forms of added sugar that don't always show up as "sugar" on the front of the package.

4. Consider the serving size. Some brands list a tiny serving size that looks nearly sugar-free โ€” but when you use the amount that actually delivers results, the sugar adds up fast.

The Bottom Line

I'm not anti-sugar. We have cake on birthdays, ice cream on road trips, and my kids absolutely love a treat. But I think parents deserve to know when a product marketed as healthy is quietly delivering a significant sugar hit every single morning.

That was one of the core reasons we built NOT. Broccoli the way we did โ€” real greens, honest ingredients, and a sugar content that doesn't sneak up on you. At just 3 grams per serving, it's something I feel good about giving my kids every day.
